Double-sided flannel: a comprehensive analysis of principles, processes and trends

Double-sided flannel is a high-end advanced category of flannel fabric. Its core feature is that both the front and back sides have a dense and soft flannel suede texture. It is different from the structure of single-sided flannel with only one side raised. It has double warmth and practicality that can be used on both sides. It is a popular fabric in the textile field that combines quality and cost performance. This article comprehensively analyzes the core characteristics and market development direction of double-sided flannel from the six dimensions of principle, process, technology, application, maintenance and trends.

1. Core principle: the synergistic effect of double-sided facing raising and fiber shrinking

The double-suede effect of double-sided flannel comes from the combination of weaving structure design and two-way milling process. Its base fabric is made of combed wool and polyester blended yarn (the classic ratio is wool 70% + polyester 30%), both warp and weft yarns are made of high-twist ply yarn, and a double-layer plain weave interwoven structure is used during weaving to reserve a fiber foundation for the fleece on both sides. Subsequently, the two-way milling process uses the milling properties of wool fibers to form a dense, short and dense pile layer on the fibers on both sides of the base fabric. At the same time, the addition of polyester fiber inhibits excessive shrinkage, and finally achieves the effect of uniform double-sided fleece and consistent hand feel.

2. Weaving process: multi-link control of double suede quality and stability

The production process of double-sided flannel is more complicated than that of single-sided flannel. The core is divided into two stages: base fabric weaving and post-finishing. Each step directly affects the texture and durability of the double-sided flannel:

  1. Raw materials and weaving: 48s/2 combed wool plied yarn and 100D polyester filament are blended, woven with a rapier loom at a speed of 280 rpm, and a double-layer interweaving process is used to create a symmetrical base fabric to ensure even fiber distribution on both sides;

  2. The core process of post-finishing: after weaving is completed, it goes through washing, pre-shrinking, two-way fleece, light fleece, and drying and shaping. Two-way raising is the key. A double-roller raising machine is used to raise the front and back sides of the base fabric, and the pile height is controlled at 0.8-1.2mm. The drying uses 110°C low-temperature hot air for shaping to avoid hardening of the suede surface. The weight of the final product is stable at 280-350g/㎡.

3. Technical parameters: core indicators define product quality level

The quality of double-sided flannel is strictly controlled by a number of technical parameters, which is the key to distinguishing high-end and ordinary products. The core indicators are in line with textile industry standards:

  1. Yarn and physical properties: The yarn twist is 600T/m for single yarn and 450T/m for plied yarn. The twist direction is opposite to ensure the yarn fastness; the breaking strength is ≥200N in the longitudinal direction and ≥160N in the transverse direction, the pilling grade is not less than 3-4, and the washing dimensional change rate is ≤±2.5%;

  2. Suede surface and sensory indicators: The density of velvet on both sides is ≥800 fibers/㎡, the velvet uniformity deviation is ≤5%, the softness reaches industry A-level standards, and there are no defects such as lint loss, pilling, or bottom exposure;

  3. Safety indicators: Comply with GB 18401 Class B requirements, formaldehyde content ≤75mg/kg, pH value 4.0-8.5, banned azo dyes have not been detected, high-end products can pass OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification.

4. Application scenarios: two-way adaptation in home and clothing fields

Double-sided flannel relies on the advantages of double-sided suede, warmth and skin-friendly, and can be used on both sides. Its application scenarios cover the two core areas of home furnishing and clothing, adapting to diversified consumer needs:

  1. Household products: It is the preferred fabric for winter bedding sets, home clothes, blankets, and pillows. The double suede surface improves warmth retention, and the double-sided usable feature extends the service life of the product. It is suitable for the elderly, children, and other people who have higher requirements for warmth retention;

  2. Clothing and apparel: used to make shirts, suit jackets, nightgowns, scarves, etc. The double-sided suede makes the front and back of the clothing textured, taking into account both wearing comfort and clean appearance, and is suitable for daily commuting and home leisure scenes;

  3. Segmented fields: Because the fabric is soft and non-irritating, it is also used in infant and child clothing, health care and medical bedding, etc. Its safety and warmth properties meet the stringent requirements of the subdivided categories.

5. Maintenance: Scientific care extends the service life of double suede.

The double-suede structure of double-sided flannel determines that it requires meticulous care. Wrong maintenance methods can easily cause the suede to fall off, become hard, and deform. The core maintenance points are as follows:

  1. Washing: Prioritize hand washing at 30°C in cold water. For machine washing, use the "wool wash" or "gentle wash" mode. Use a neutral wool-specific detergent to avoid bleach and softener to prevent damage to the fiber and suede structure;

  2. Dehydration and drying: dehydrate at low speed (400-600 rpm), do not twist hard; when drying, lay it flat in a ventilated and cool place, or hang it on a wide hanger to avoid direct sunlight to prevent the suede from fading and hardening;

  3. Storage and daily care: Make sure the fabric is completely dry before storing. You can put moth balls in to prevent moths and avoid flattening the suede due to heavy pressure. After daily use, gently pat the suede and comb the fluff to maintain the fluffiness.

6. Development trend: greening, functionalization and lightweighting in parallel

With the upgrading of the textile industry and the upgrading of consumer demand, the development of double-sided flannel is moving towards three major directions: green environmental protection, functional composite, and lightweight:

  1. Greening of raw materials: The application proportion of recycled polyester and bio-based wool substitutes is gradually increasing, and environmentally friendly washing and low-temperature setting processes are popularized to reduce water and energy consumption in the production process;

  2. Functional compounding: On the basis of retaining the double suede characteristics, superimposing antibacterial, antistatic, antimite and other functions, such as adding silver ion antibacterial fiber, to expand the application in high-end home textiles and medical bedding;

  3. Product lightweight: Through yarn refinement and process optimization, lightweight double-sided flannel with a weight of 220-260g/㎡ is developed, which is suitable for spring and autumn clothing and household items, breaking through the seasonal restrictions of winter use.

Through process innovation and structural optimization, double-sided flannel gives traditional flannel higher practicality and added value, becoming a category with both reputation and sales in the textile market. In the future, with the continuous breakthroughs in green technology and functional technology, double-sided flannel will further cover more segmented scenes and become one of the core products of the thermal fabric track.
