T/R spandex air layer is a three-layer functional knitted fabric made of polyester (T) and viscose (R) blended yarn as the basic raw material, with inlaid spandex yarns woven on both sides. It combines the stiffness and wear resistance of polyester, the moisture absorption and skin-friendly properties of viscose, and the high elasticity and rebound properties of spandex. The hollow structure has the advantages of both warmth and breathability. It is widely used in sweatshirts, jackets, sportswear and other fields. It is a mainstream clothing fabric that combines practicality and comfort. The following is a detailed explanation from the six core dimensions to provide reference for industry material selection and application.
The characteristics of T/R spandex air layer originate from the dual effects of fiber component synergy and three-layer structural design:
Complementary mechanism of fiber properties: polyester (50%-60%) has a stable molecular chain structure, giving the fabric strong wrinkle resistance and dimensional stability; viscose fiber (30%-40%) is a cellulose fiber with a moisture absorption rate of 12%-15%, which improves the skin-friendly and breathable effect of the fabric; the polyurethane soft segment structure of spandex yarn (5%-10%) can be stretched to 4-7 times its original length, with a rebound rate of over 10%. 95%, providing long-lasting elasticity to the fabric, and the blend of the three achieves a performance balance of "stiff but not stiff, moisture-absorbent but not stuffy, and elastic but not loose".
The functional principle of the air layer structure: the fabric adopts a three-layer double-sided weaving structure. The surface layer and the bottom layer are T/R blended plain weave or fine rib texture, and there is a hollow air layer in the middle. It uses the insulating and buffering properties of the air to achieve "warmth without bulk"; at the same time, the hollow layer accelerates air circulation, and cooperates with the hygroscopic properties of viscose fiber to quickly export human sweat, making it suitable for wearing in many seasons.
The production of T/R spandex air layer is divided into three core links: raw material pretreatment - double-sided weaving - finishing. Each step requires precise control of parameters:
Raw material pretreatment: Polyester and viscose are blended into yarn in proportion, and the yarn strength is increased through loose winding and parallel twisting; the spandex yarn is made into core-spun yarn using nylon coating process to avoid breakage during weaving, and the elastic elongation of the spandex core-spun yarn is controlled at 200%-300%.
Weaving process
A double-sided circular knitting machine is equipped with three bars. Bars 1 and 3 weave the T/R blended yarn of the surface layer and the bottom layer, and bar 2 inlays the spandex core-spun yarn to connect the upper and lower layers to form a hollow air layer with uniform thickness (thickness 0.5-1.0mm);
When weaving, the stitch length is 24G-28G, the warp tension is controlled at 10-15cN, and the fabric weight is controlled at 220-350g/㎡. The thin version is suitable for spring and autumn clothing, and the thick version is suitable for winter sweaters and coats.
Post-finishing process: First pre-shape at 150-160°C to eliminate the internal stress of the weaving, then use disperse/reactive dyes in the same bath (disperse dyes for polyester, reactive dyes for viscose), and the dyeing temperature is controlled at 95-100°C; finally, softeners, antistatic agents or antibacterial additives are applied, and the final setting temperature does not exceed 140°C to avoid high temperature damage to the elasticity of spandex.
T/R spandex air layer fabric covers multiple segments of the clothing industry with its comfort and shaping advantages:
Casual clothing field: used to make sweatshirts, hoodies, and jackets. The stiff and anti-wrinkle properties make the clothing less likely to deform. The air layer is warm and suitable for spring, autumn and winter. The elastic design improves wearing tolerance;
Sportswear field: produces sports jackets, fitness clothes, and yoga pants. Viscose fiber absorbs moisture and wicks away sweat. Spandex elasticity fits the human body's range of motion. The hollow structure is cushioning and shock-absorbing, adapting to medium-to-high-intensity sports scenes;
Children's clothing field: making children's sweatshirts and jackets, which are soft and skin-friendly and non-irritating. The elastic fabric does not restrict children's activities. The anti-wrinkle and easy-care characteristics meet the needs of parents;
Home clothing field: used in home clothes and pajama sets. It is warm and breathable and has good drape properties, improving the comfort of home wear.
Storage environment: Place in a cool and dry warehouse with a temperature of 15-30°C and a relative humidity of less than 60%. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent aging of polyester, yellowing of viscose, and elastic attenuation of spandex;
Stacking requirements: Store rolled fabrics vertically to avoid air layer collapse and fabric deformation caused by heavy pressure; fabrics of different colors are stored separately and sealed to prevent dye migration.
Washing method: Use neutral detergent, hand wash in cold water or gentle machine wash (put in a laundry bag), avoid vigorous rubbing to prevent the spandex filaments from breaking and air layer delamination; it is forbidden to use bleach to avoid damaging the fibers;
Drying and ironing: Lay flat to dry in a cool and ventilated place, prohibit exposure to the sun; if ironing is required, control the temperature at 110-120°C, iron at low temperature with a cloth, and avoid directly ironing the surface of the fabric;
Special attention: avoid friction with sharp objects when wearing to prevent snagging; the elasticity of the fabric will decrease with long-term stretching, so avoid hanging and exposing it to the sun for a long time.
The technological innovation of T/R spandex air layer fabric focuses on two major sectors: fiber modification and process optimization:
Functional modification technology: Develop antibacterial T/R spandex air layer (added silver ion antibacterial agent), with a bacteriostatic rate of over 99%, suitable for close-fitting clothing and medical protective clothing linings; introduce anti-UV additives to increase the UPF value of the fabric to 50+, expanding the application scenarios of outdoor clothing;
Process optimization direction: Weaving with fine-denier T/R blended yarn (40D/36F) to improve the fineness and skin-friendly feel of the fabric; developing double-sided heterostructure fabric to achieve a differentiated touch with one side smooth and one brushed; optimizing the spandex core-spun yarn inlay weaving process to improve the bonding fastness of spandex and T/R yarn, and the elasticity retention rate exceeds 90% after 50 washes;
Environmentally friendly process upgrade: Use recycled polyester to replace virgin polyester to reduce carbon footprint; promote low-temperature dyeing and waterless digital printing technology to reduce energy consumption and wastewater emissions, meeting the needs of green textile development.
As the textile industry transforms toward "comfort, greenness, and functionality", T/R spandex air layer fabrics are showing three major development trends:
Green trend: The application proportion of recycled T/R fiber continues to increase, and brands are gradually launching air layer fabrics made of 100% recycled raw materials to meet environmental certification and consumer green consumption needs;
The trend of functional compounding: from a single function of keeping warm and breathable to a multi-functional compound direction of "warmth + antibacterial + anti-UV + moisture absorption and heating", suitable for high-end clothing scenes such as outdoor and medical use;
Customization trend: In response to the needs of clothing brands, we provide personalized customization services for air layer thickness, weight, and elastic coefficient, and develop sub-categories such as ultra-thin models (gram weight <200g/㎡) and thickened models (gram weight >400g/㎡).
