Hot velvet printing is a composite fabric processing technology that combines hot velvet fabric base + printing process. The finished product combines the soft texture of suede with the rich color patterns of printing. It is widely used in home textiles, clothing, decorative items and other fields. It is a popular fabric category that takes into account both appearance and practicality. This article comprehensively analyzes the core value of velvet printing from the six dimensions of principle, process, application, maintenance, technology, and trends.
The advantages of hot-light velvet printing come from the dual combination of the suede structure of hot-light velvet + the color adhesion principle of the printing process:
Characteristics of the base material of hot velvet: Hot velvet is a velvet fabric that has been treated with high-temperature scalding. Common raw materials are polyester, nylon or cotton blends. Through the hot pressing and carding action of the ironing machine, the suede fibers become smooth, smooth, and soft in luster, and at the same time form a dense short pile structure, which not only enhances the skin-friendly feel of the fabric, but also provides a flat and strong adsorption carrier for printing.
The adhesion principle of the printing process is that printing dyes or inks are combined with the velvet through two methods: penetration and fixation: the dye molecules will penetrate into the suede fiber and integrate with the fiber after being fixed at high temperature; the ink is attached to the surface of the suede through an adhesive, forming a three-dimensional or matte pattern effect. The dense short velvet structure of hot stamped velvet can effectively prevent the printed pattern from cracking and falling off, while improving the color saturation and clarity of the pattern.
The production of iron-on velvet printing requires three core stages: base fabric preparation - printing processing - finishing and shaping. Each link directly affects the quality of the finished product:
Base fabric preparation
Raw material spinning: Use polyester short fiber or cotton-polyester blended yarn, and spin and combine it to make yarn suitable for weaving;
Weaving and shaping: Weft knitting technology is used to weave gray fabric, and then it is raised and carded to form fluffy fluff on the surface of the fabric;
High-temperature ironing: The raised fabric is fed into the ironing machine, and is rolled and combed by a high-temperature (120-150°C) hot press roller to make the fluff smooth and in the right direction, forming a smoothed velvet base with uniform luster.
Printing processing selects the printing process according to product requirements. There are two mainstream methods:
Reactive printing: suitable for cotton blended ironed velvet, using reactive dyes, which are printed, steamed, and washed to fix the color. The pattern is brightly colored, has good air permeability, and is not easy to fade;
Digital printing: suitable for small batch customization. The dye is directly printed on the suede surface through computer-controlled nozzles, which can achieve complex patterns and gradient color effects with high precision and no printing costs.
Finishing and shaping
Color fixation treatment: After printing, it is baked at high temperature to fully combine the dye with the fiber and improve the color fastness;
Softening finishing: spray softener to maintain the skin-friendly touch of ironed velvet;
Size setting: The width and length of the fabric are fixed through a setting machine to prevent deformation after washing.
With the characteristics of softness and skin-friendly, rich patterns and soft luster, the application of hot stamping velvet printing covers the three major fields of home textiles, clothing and decorative products:
Home textile field: It is the preferred fabric for blankets, sheets, quilt covers, and pillowcases. The printed patterns can be designed in cartoon, floral, geometric and other styles to adapt to different home decoration styles; the warmth of suede and the decorative nature of printing are combined to enhance the warmth of the home.
Apparel field: used to make autumn and winter sweatshirts, home clothes, children's jackets, scarves, etc., which are skin-friendly and non-irritating, and the printed patterns are fashionable and eye-catching; some high-end products are also used to make stage costumes. The suede luster is matched with the printed colors to create outstanding visual effects.
In the field of decorative products: it can be used to make pillows, cushions, curtains, sofa covers and other soft furnishings. It can also be used in plush toys and gift packaging materials to increase the added value of products with its high-looking features.
Scientific maintenance can extend the service life of ironed velvet printed fabrics and maintain the integrity of the velvet texture and printed patterns:
Cleaning precautions
The water temperature should be controlled below 30°C, and hand washing or gentle machine washing should be preferred to avoid strong stirring that may cause the suede to pill and prints to fall off;
Use neutral detergent, and prohibit the use of bleach and alkaline laundry detergent to prevent fabrics from becoming hard and prints from fading;
Dark printed fabrics should be washed separately for the first time to avoid color fading and contamination of other clothing.
Drying and storage
After washing, gently squeeze out the water and lay it flat in a cool and ventilated place to dry. Avoid exposure to the sun. High temperatures will cause aging of the suede, dull luster, and cracking of the print;
When storing, fold it neatly and put it in a dry closet to avoid the growth of mold in a humid environment;
If there is slight pilling on the fabric, you can use a hair ball trimmer to gently trim it; if there are snags in the printing area, use scissors to carefully cut off the threads without pulling.
With the upgrade of textile technology, velvet printing has achieved multiple innovations in printing accuracy, color fastness, and functionality:
High-precision printing technology: Using digital printing piezoelectric nozzles, the printing accuracy can reach more than 1200dpi, which can clearly restore fine patterns to meet the needs of personalized customization; at the same time, the ink formula is optimized to make it more suitable for the suede structure of ironed velvet to avoid pattern smearing.
High color fastness technology: Research and development of a special suede printing fixing agent. After treatment, the washing color fastness of the fabric can reach level 4 or above, and the rubbing color fastness can reach level 3-4, which solves the pain point of traditional printing that is easy to fade.
Functional superposition technology: Add antibacterial agents and antistatic agents during the printing process to develop antibacterial velvet printed fabrics, expanding their applications in medical home textiles, children's clothing and other fields; some products also achieve waterproof and antifouling functions to improve practicality.
From the perspective of consumer demand and industry technological innovation, velvet printing will develop in three major directions: personalization, functionality, and greenness in the future:
Personalized customization trend: Small batch, fast-reverse digital printing will become the mainstream. Companies can quickly design and produce exclusive patterns according to customer needs to meet the differentiated competitive needs of clothing and home textile brands.
Functional fusion trend: Combine thermal, antibacterial, antistatic and other functions with printing technology to develop products suitable for segmented scenarios, such as thermal printed sweatshirts for outdoor sports and antibacterial printed hospital gowns for medical use.
Green and sustainable trend: Use recycled polyester to make hot stamped velvet base, and use water-based dyes and plant dyes for printing to reduce environmental pollution in the production process; at the same time, promote waterless printing technology to save water resources and meet the development requirements of green textiles.
